You can use the supplied Notes® InstallCleanup Executable (NICE) tool to clean up a failed install, faileduninstall, or failed upgrade. You can also use the tool to uninstallan existing version of Notes,and clean up extraneous files, before performing an upgrade installation.The tool is available for Notes onsupported Windows™ platformsonly, and must be run by an administrator.

TheNICE tool (nice.exe) is supplied in the Utility subdirectoryin the Notes install kit.It can be run on all Notes releases6.5 and newer.

The tool removes various files and settings, includingregistry setting values, program files, and Notes user data files. It obtains the locationof applicable files and folders by searching the registry for settingsthat contain a 'xpdInstallLocation' or 'XPD_INSTALL_LOCATION' value,such as the following:

Lotus Notes is a highly technical platform to operate by users, still, it is the most prominent email client among the users. Through the highly technical methodology, a tyro user faces many errors due to inexperience in Domino/IBM Notes or lack of technical knowledge.

If NICE detects certain processes,you are instructed to shut down; NICE does not close these processesfor you. The list includes the following:

• nminder.exe
• soffice.bin
• soffice.exe

If NICE detects certain services, it will stop them. Theservice list includes the following:

1. The program lets you choose the components that you want to install, namely Notes Client (e.g. Notes Browser Plug-in, Client Help Files, Domino Enterprise Connection Service, Spell Checker), IBM.
2. Lotus Mail Reader is an app for reading your IBM Lotus Notes Mail. No more keying in details of server, username and password every time you visit webmail. Install this app and it comes in handy for one click mail checking.
3. Click Start, Programs, Lotus Applications, then Lotus Notes to open the program. Enter your name then uncheck I want to connect to a Domino server and then click Next.

NICE then removes the following items:

• Shared DLL files based on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSharedDlls registrysetting
• Notes workspace directory(for release 8.0 and newer) -- User's Data Directory/workspace
• Program files (if the Remove all program files checkbox or command line option is enabled) -- All ProgramFilesIBMNotes directory contents are removed except the ProgramFilesIBMNotesData subdirectory.
  Note: For NICE toremove the preceding items, Remove Data Files mustbe disabled.
• Desktop shortcuts -- Notes, Domino® Designer, Domino Administrator desktop shortcuts areremoved, as are applicable Start > Programs menu shortcuts.
• Notes data files (if the Remove all data files check box or commandline option is enabled) -- The Notes datadirectory, as specified in the registry, is deleted.

Considerrunning NICE in the following situations:

• Clean install -- Remove the existing Notes installation, and clean the registry,to prepare for a clean install.
• Failed install -- Detect the install version (release) from theregistry and clean up registry settings and files on the system toprepare for a clean install of the same release.
• Failed upgrade -- Detect the install version (release) from theregistry and clean up registry settings and files on the system toprepare for a clean install or the upgrade release.
• Failed uninstall -- Detect the version (release) from the registryand clean up registry settings and files on the system to preparefor a clean install.

For all situations, the following occurs:

If a Notes version is not detectedin the registry but files exist in the default location , you areprompted to remove those files from disk.

Forexample, if there is no entry for Notes inthe Add/Remove Programs dialog box, NICE detects whether there isa key in registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARELotusNotes,gets the PROGDIR and DATADIR information from the registry, and doesthe deletion. If there is no key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARELotusNotes,NICE does nothing.

If there is no Add/Remove Programs entryfor Notes, but there are registrykeys in either HKCUSoftwareLotusNotesInstaller or HKLMSoftwareLotusNotes,you can remove those registry settings. For example, if there is noAdd/Remove Programs entry for Notes,NICE gets the PROGDIR and DATADIR information from HKLMSoftwareLotusNotes andcontinues to remove program files, remove shortcuts, and clean theregistry.

1. Log in to the Windows operatingsystem as an administrative user and ensure that Notes is not running.
2. Locate and run the NICE tool; double-click the nice.exe executablefrom the Notes install kit's Utility subdirectoryor run nice.exe from a command line.
   Thetool checks for an existing Notes installation,informs you what version is installed, and enables you to specifyremoval options.
3. Optional: Enable Remove all programfiles to remove applicable files and folders in the ProgramFilesIBMNotes directory.
   Note: All ProgramFilesIBMNotes directory contents are removed except the ProgramFilesIBMNotesData subdirectory.
4. Optional: Enable Remove all datafiles to remove the user's data directory, as specifiedin the registry.
   Note: The Remove all data files checkbox is disabled when Notes isinstalled in multi user mode.
5. Click Remove to delete the filesspecified by the selected options.
   Note: If neither optionis enabled, the tool removes only the registry entries, stops services,and leaves all the files on disk.
6. Respond to any confirmation prompts.
7. A progress bar indicates the progress of the cleanup process.When cleanup is complete, the NICE user interface closes.

In the next section we described the three stage process to complete the migrate Lotus Notes to new computer task:

Stage 1: Get ID File of Lotus Notes

It is important to gather the “.ID” files from the current system or machine or a laptop, which holds some crucial information of your account for communicating with other mail server.

Open “My Computer” in you system and go to below mentioned location;

“My Computer > C > Lotus > Notes > Data”

Here you will view a file with .ID extension. The name of the file depends on your username in IBM Notes application. For instance, here user.id file is available. Copy this file and save it in Pen Drive and this file and information available in this file will be used on the target machine.

Stage 2: Find Domino Server Address

IBM can host multiple servers and in this case, one must know which Domino Server is being used and your account is assigned to which server. Domino Server is used for Mail server hosting and correct server information is extremely important to implement the technique, which will be used by us. It carries user e-mail and you will host the local copy needed for replication with assigned Domino Server(s) for exchanging emails.

In order to find Domino Server Address, it is important to boot up and then Login in Lotus Notes application. Once you have successfully logged in, go to the Workspace and click on drop-down arrow in mail program.

If there is two or more server available, make sure that you note the details of your server. Note the details like full server name and path. This information will be essential to find your account by new IBM Notes install on target machine on provided mail server.

IP address of the server has also to be found so that IBM Notes application does not get confused with multiple hosts’ names. For this, open Command Prompt window.

Go to Start>>Run>> type CMD and Enter.

In order to find the IP address, “ping” the Domino Server and find the IP address using below mentioned command.

Ping [Server Name]

Here server name is “lotus” and hence we will type ping lotus;

IP address will be traced using this command and it varies for different users. All the information received here should be noted down which will be used later.

Stage 3: Install Lotus Notes in New Computer / Laptop / PC

In earlier steps, we gathered .ID file, server name/path and IP Address of the server. Now we can proceed to install new IBM Notes application in another PC / Laptop / Machine. Get a fresh version of IBM Notes through ISSI, any version will work fine. When the installation is done 90-95% it will prompt you to setup Lotus Notes for install to finish.

Wizard Setup

• Welcome screen of the wizard will appear like below. Click on Next to proceed further
• Here provide Your Name and Domino Server name or path (in this case, it is lotus/IWS). Click Next once you provide correct details
• Apply Connection Settings as per your environment and click Next
• In this next window, provide details like Domino Server Name & Path, Network Information and IP Address we traced in above-mentioned steps. Click Next once the information is fed
• Next step will ask you for User ID file which we copied in Pen drive. Save the ID file in new target machine and click on Browse to navigate to its location. It will prompt you to make copy of it, click Yes to this message prompt. Once the file is added successfully, click on Next
• Do Not Select any Option in next screen and click Finish
• Once the set-up is successfully installed, a message will be prompt click “Yes” to it.

Conclusion

If everything is correctly done after migrate Lotus Notes to new computer, you will be able to access your emails in Lotus Notes the way you do in previous system. There are some cases where while downloading “Domino application files” users are prompted with warning message that some of the .nsf files are missing. If you get such messages, simply copy these files from “notes” folder on target system. This process will help you to access emails of Lotus Notes in any other PC/Laptop. Moreover you may also need to merge NSF Files, if your new machine already configured with your new account in Lotus Notes.
