AXYZ design has released an(i)ma 1.7, the latest update to its intuitive crowd animation tool, adding the option to export crowd animations in Collada format for use in any modern 3D package.
Previously, an(i)ma was only compatible with 3ds Max and Cinema 4D, by means of its export plugins.
Simple, drag-and-drop crowd animations
An(i)ma enables users to set up simple crowd animations by defining paths through a scene along which characters can move. The software blends between animation states and handles collisions automatically.
Actors can interact with other characters in the scene, or environment objects like door and stairs.
The software is mainly aimed at architectural visualisation professionals, but has also been licensed by a number of broadcast and visual effects companies, including Fox Networks and Pixomondo.
Updated 10 September 2014: AXYZ design has now posted a full feature list for an(i)ma 1.7 and a demo video.
As well as the option to export skeletal animation data in Collada format, the update adds the option to export animations as MDD and PC2 point cache files. There is also a new Pose Editor.
An(i)ma 1.7 is available now for Windows only and Mac OS X. It costs €349 €249. The connectivity plugins are compatible with 3ds Max 2010 and above and Cinema 4D R13 and above.
Updated 27 February 2015: AXYZ design has released an(i)ma 1.7.1 for OS X, a Mac version of an(i)ma 1.7 for Cinema 4D. It’s a free update from the Mac version of an(i)ma 1.5 or the Windows version of an(i)ma 1.6.
The price of a new licence of the software has also been reduced from €349 to €249 (around $280).

1- Time Remapping Effects (Slow-Motion & Time Lapse): Time Remapping Effects NOTES: We recommend that you bake your animations before exporting your scene. Sometimes you might need to create slow motion or time-lapse effects to create a stronger visual impact.
2- Prepare a Motion Clip Using Biped or a Generic model: Prepare a Motion Clip Using Biped or a Generic model Open 3ds Max. Either create a biped rig using the instructions in Biped Creation Workflow, load the Generic Male or Generic Female characters that you can download from here, or use any Metropoly rigged character.
3- Prepare a Motion Clip using Mixamo: Prepare a Motion Clip using Mixamo Mixamo is an online service for automatically rigging characters and preparing and downloading Motion Clips. It is currently free for anyone with an Adobe ID.
4- Using Categories and Tags: Tags and categories help to to organize your resources and tell the system how to match appropriate motion clips to characters. Tags are used to define the attributes of actors. Examples might include age, gender, ethnicity type of dress etc.
5- Importing Motion Clips: In addition to being able to extend anima® with additional Characters, you can also import your own motion clips. Motion clips should be applied to an anima® compatible rig and imported using the FBX format.
6- Bake Animations: Why bake animations? Anima is a true simulator, this means that as you add or edit actors, motions, walkways, areas and so on the different elements act like dominoes, interacting with one another in ways that are not always predictable.
